IDF Master Sergeant (Res.) Basil Sweid, 32, died while serving in southern Lebanon yesterday evening when the fuel truck he was driving overturned. According to Ynet, another soldier was also injured. The accident comes as both Israeli and Lebanese officials denied U.S. claims that the IDF has begun withdrawing from its security zones in Lebanon, as was agreed upon during talks in Washington, D.C., earlier this week.
Sweid served as a driver in 7th Battalion 75 of the 7th Brigade and was operating as part of the IDF’s Golani Brigade combat team at the time of the accident, which occurred at 10:50 p.m.
Sweid was a close friend of Major (Res.) Jamal Abbas, a company commander in Battalion 101 of the Paratroopers Brigade, who was killed on November 18, 2023, in the Gaza Strip at the age of 23. “Two close friends, two fighters, two heroes,” was written on the “Druze Speak Out” Facebook page. “Two brave young men, the salt of the earth, who chose a path of service, responsibility, and sacrifice for the security of the state. The heart breaks at their picture — a smile, friendship, and comradeship that turned into a painful memory connecting two families, a whole community, and an entire nation.”
Under the proposed pilot plan, the IDF would withdraw from designated zones, which would then be handed over to the Lebanese Armed Forces to enter and disarm the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist group. The Lebanese government has delayed taking this step since Hezbollah entered the war against Israel in support of Iran. Both Israeli and Lebanese officials have expressed frustration that a ceasefire with Hezbollah was not included in last week’s memorandum of understanding with Iran.
Israeli and Lebanese officials met at the Pentagon yesterday and are scheduled to meet at the State Department today, though few public statements have been made about the discussions. The United States has been pushing for progress that would justify at least an initial withdrawal. Meanwhile, the IDF carried out a strike on a vehicle that entered one of its security zones. Local media reported that two people were killed.
The Fellowship and our supporters are grateful for the continued friendship between the United States and Israel as diplomatic efforts continue this week. We pray for wisdom and strength for all those involved in these negotiations,as well as for comfort and peace for the Sweid family.
