Somos Un Pueblo Unido (Somos) celebrates the United States Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship, preserving a constitutional protection that has guaranteed citizenship for children born in the United States for generations and providing certainty for millions of families across the country.
The Court’s decision reaffirms that children born in the United States are citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. At a time of escalating attacks on immigrant communities and efforts to weaken long-standing constitutional protections, this ruling rejects attempts to deny citizenship to children born and raised here.
For working families in New Mexico, this decision protects stability in the places where immigrants live and work. Immigrant families are an essential part of New Mexico’s workforce and daily life, contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the state and sustaining industries including construction, healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, education, and oil and gas
“Immigrant workers are essential to New Mexico’s cultural fabric and the economy, and our children deserve full rights and opportunity. Birthright citizenship is one of the clearest promises in the Constitution,” said Marcela Díaz, Executive Director of Somos Un Pueblo Unido. “Today’s decision provides a key protection for our families and communities. The ruling also comes amid increased immigration enforcement, family separation, and policies that have created fear across the state. While it does not resolve the broader challenges families continue to face, it affirms a core principle: we belong here. Somos will continue organizing until every family can live and work with dignity and safety. ”
Somos will also continue to expand its statewide pro-se naturalization initiative, Citizenship Now!, to support immigrants in their quest to become U.S.Citizens.
