Major Victory for Parents Today!

Meta has agreed to a historic $17.1 billion settlement with attorneys general over claims involving harm to children and teens on Facebook and Instagram.

Even more importantly, Meta has agreed to significant new safeguards for young users, including a default two-hour daily limit that teens can’t turn off without parental approval, nighttime restrictions, muted notifications during school hours, stronger content protections, and greater parental controls.

This is a significant win for child safety and for our movement to Let Parents Parent.

For years, Family Policy Alliance, our network of 39 state Family Policy Councils, and more than 300 Statesmen Academy alumni serving in 42 state legislatures have helped lead the effort to protect children online and put parents back in the driver’s seat.

Together, we have helped advance and pass age-verification protections in 27 states. Over the past two years, we’ve also led theApp Store Accountability Coalition, advancing model legislation in dozens of states. And already four states have passed App Store Accountability laws in Texas, Utah, Alabama, and Louisiana.

We are proud to have played a part in building the momentum that is changing how lawmakers and Big Tech approach child safety online.

But today’s victory is just the beginning.

A multibillion-dollar settlement can’t undo harm already done. We want to prevent that harm in the first place by empowering parents and holding Big Tech accountable.

And Meta shouldn’t be the last. TikTok, Google, Snapchat, and Apple need to step up, too.

Will you help us send them that message?

Copy and paste the message below on Facebook or X, and tag TikTok, Google, Snapchat, and Apple:

“Meta’s new protections for children are an important step forward. Now it’s time for TikTok, Google, Snapchat, and Apple to step up, empower parents, and make child safety a priority across their platforms. Our kids deserve better. #LetParentsParent”

The momentum is building. Together, let’s make sure Big Tech gets the message: When it comes to our children, parents must come first.
