Discover New Mexico’s Heritage at the Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum

New Mexico’s history isn’t just something found in books. It can be seen in the art, traditions, craftsmanship and stories that have been passed from one generation to the next.

The Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum in Santa Fe gives visitors an opportunity to experience that history while celebrating the artists who continue these traditions today.

And one of the best parts? Admission to the museum is free.

A MUSEUM BUILT AROUND NEW MEXICO’S HERITAGE

The Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum is dedicated to the rich Hispano arts of New Mexico while also showing how those traditions connect to a much larger global history.

The museum takes an artist-forward and community-led approach, bringing historic works together with the work of contemporary artists who continue to practice traditional New Mexican art forms.

Its permanent collection features works primarily from New Mexico, along with historic pieces from around the world. Nearly half of the collection comes from Spanish Market artists dating from the 1920s through today.

CURRENT EXHIBITS

Visitors currently have the opportunity to experience New Mexico Stories, an annual exhibition highlighting what makes the art of New Mexico unique.

The 2026 exhibition places a special focus on heritage arts, the tools artists use and the symbols found throughout these traditions. The exhibition is scheduled to remain on view through December 2026.

Also currently on display is The Carson Phenomenon: A Colcha Cottage Industry, which tells the story of the small community of Carson, outside Taos, through colcha, historical documents and family stories. That exhibition continues through October 2026.

MORE THAN A COLLECTION

The museum’s collection provides an important connection between generations of New Mexican artists.

Visitors can see how materials, techniques and artistic traditions have developed over time while discovering art forms that continue to be practiced today.

The museum also maintains collections, a library and archives that help preserve these stories and make them accessible to artists, researchers and members of the community.

THE BUILDING HAS A STORY TOO

Even the museum’s home is part of New Mexico’s architectural history.

The museum is located in a 1930 Pueblo-Spanish Revival Director’s Residence designed by renowned architect John Gaw Meem.

According to the museum, it is the only residential building in Santa Fe designed by Meem that is open to the public.
