Media Outlet’s Half-Truth Claim Backfires

BIG NEWS! Thanks to your calls, emails, and persistent action — and our determination to expose the closed-door talks on the University of New Mexico’s abortion expansion agenda — the truth is now rising to the surface.

Yesterday we received two clear confirmations. A University of New Mexico (UNM) spokesperson admitted to the Santa Fe New Mexican that UNM is “exploring ways” to purchase healthcare clinical facilities in San Miguel County. At the same time, Alta Vista Regional Hospital CEO Helen Ballantyne confirmed that the hospital entered into a preliminary letter of intent with UNM.

These dual admissions do not merely validate our concerns — they prove we were right on target. Everything we exposed last month is now confirmed. AGAIN.

TAXPAYER FUNDED UNM: THE LEAST TRANSPARENT PARTY. WHY?

Yet the Santa Fe New Mexican, through reporter Margaret O’Hara, tried to dismiss our reporting as a “half-truth” in what can only be described as an attempt to downplay concerns about UNM’s abortion expansion. That attempt has backfired in a big way. The facts are no longer in dispute. UNM admits they are indeed exploring the purchase. Alta Vista signed a letter of intent. In fact, O’Hara’s misleading claim also highlighted UNM’s intent to target Las Vegas, NM for an abortion center–information released by NMAFL last month. Take action below.

And the door remains wide open for future partnerships: Alta Vista CEO Helen Ballantyne’sstatement on the hospital purchase further clarified the situation: the hospital will “continue to evaluate strategic partnerships and opportunities” that expand access to care.

“We applaud Alta Vista CEO Helen Ballantyne’s transparency. It confirms what we exposed last month: UNM intends to purchase the site, and if they use the $10 million reproductive health appropriation, it will include abortion,” said Elisa Martinez, Executive Director of NMAFL. “UNM is the largest institutional driver of elective abortion in New Mexico and has already stated plans to target Las Vegas for a second abortion facility. As a taxpayer-funded institution using our dollars, their ongoing secrecy only highlights that most New Mexicans reject expanding abortion into legitimate healthcare spaces.”

The Santa Fe New Mexican owed its readers the full story. Instead, it minimized the truth. We will not. These confirmations reveal a key player in the matter who has largely been missing: Senator Pete Campos who touts his “Senior Member” of the NM Senate status, and is ordained Catholic deacon of Immaculate Conception parish in Las Vegas. Campos also sits on the Alta Vista Board of Trustees.

  • Las Vegas, NM Catholic Deacon
  • Senior Member of the NM Senate
  • Alta Vista Board of Trustees member

Senator Pete Campos is the senior-most member of the New Mexico Legislature and sits on the Alta Vista board. He has remained silent while this deal moves forward in the dark.

Contact him today and demand answers:

•  Where has he been while these closed-door negotiations took place?

•  Why is he not defending the people of San Miguel County?

•  Why is he allowing a taxpayer-funded university to explore bringing abortion services into a local hospital?

Tell Senator Campos politely and clearly:

Will he oppose any UNM purchase or partnership that includes abortion services? Will he provide full public transparency on all negotiations, funding sources (especially the $10 million reproductive health appropriation), and long-term plans for Alta Vista.

Call and email him now. CONTACT: Senator Pete Campos: 505 946 5558, email: pete.campos@nmlegis.gov office:vanetia.aragon@nmlegis.gov

Then share this with three friends and ask them to do the same. Silence is not neutrality — it is consent. Make your voice heard today.
