St. Michael’s girls soccer wins again

By Arnie Leshin
It was the kind of a soccer match where you find ways to give your team a time for everyone to take the field.
And that’s what first-year head coach Alfonso Camarerna did with his St. Michael’s girls as they dominated a 10-0 mercy-rule ambush of visiting Monte del Sol at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon.
It advanced the Lady Horsemen to 3-0-1 and Camarena made sure to get everyone into the shorted match. It also dropped the Dragons to 0-2.
“I wasn’t about to run it up,” he said, “but we already had a 6-run lead after one half and I was able to clear my bench instead of just leaving in my regulars to keep dominating. In the second half I did the same until they stopped the game at about 22 minutes of the second half. To let everyone play is a good thing.”
It was the second time that St. Michael’s had a commanding lead and was able insert everybody. That came in the 9-0 win over Gallup Rehoboth Christian played in Albuquerque. In their other matches, the Lady Horsemen opened with a 2-1 triumph over visiting Sandia Prep, a 5-time state champion. Next came a scoreless tie at Los Alamos, where Camarena’s team dominated but had to settle for a standoff.
The next stop is at East Mountain Tuesday afternoon in a District 2-3A match.
The St, Michael’s scoring was spread out as senior Olivia Farrah came away with two goals and an assist, senior Cassie Gravel tallied twice, senior Rachel Morgan had a goal and an assist, freshman Elsa Ranney Smith scored once, as did sophomore Grace Sandoval, 8th-grader Tara Schneider, and sophomore Jacqueline Gorman.
It was also good news for the team when a reported broken nose occurring to Sandoval in the Los Alamos game turned into a bad bruise.
