The undefeated Pecos girls have surprising moved to the top of the 2A basketball rankings

Mescalero Apache, who Pecos defeated in overtime for its first state championship in 2018, is no longer undefeated after Monday night‘s 50-37 loss to once-beaten Lordsburg, and so the surprising unbeaten Panthers head the 2A list as the final week of the basketball regular-season winds down.
It was a struggle though for Pecos to come from behind and edge visiting non-district opponent, 40-37, Monday night for its ninth consecutive victory, and as the District 6-2A leaders. The Panthers trailed 13-8 after the opening quarter and 23-16 at the intermission. But in the third quarter, they combined a 16-3 run with solid defense to grab a 32-26 advantage and hold off a late challenge from Mora, which is now 5-4 overall in 2A.
Senior Trinity Herrera, who leads Pecos in every offensive department, turned in the game-high 23 points and brought down 10 rebounds.
At Santa Fe Prep Monday in a non-district contest, the 3A Griffins got past 2A Monte del Sol, 31-28. The result left both teams at 2-7overall.
At St. Michael’s in a non-district game Monday, 4A Pojoaque Valley took an early lead and left with a 39-29 win to improve to 3-7 overall and drop the 3A Lady Horsemen to 3-4. The Elkettes led 11-6 after one quarter and 16-11 at the half. They were on top by 24-18 after three quarters, but the home side closed the gap with a 11-5 stretch run.
