Joshua Abeyta advances to a first place finish

By Arnie Leshin
After a series of runner-up finishes, it was the time for Santa Fe Prep senior Joshua Abetya to cross the line first and he did so in Saturday morning‘s annual John Grimley Memorial Cross Country Invite hosted by Santa Fe Indian School and run over its Pueblo course in Santa Fe.
Abeyra was clocked in 17:43.47, another impressive time, but this time it was he showing his heels, with Santa Fe High senior Tanner Black second in 18:00.18, and third was Pecos’ Aidan Holton timed in 18:10.21. It was a tight 5,000 meters, with nine harriers behind Abeyta running under 19 minutes, and with Abeyta the only one to break 18 minutes.
The team title went to Pecos with 44 points, with Santa Fe Prep taking second with 65, host Indian School next with 112, followed by St. Michael’s taking fourth with 124, and Academy of Technology and The Classics 8th with 183 in a field of 18 schools, some without full lineups.
In all, there were 234 entries in the varsity, junior varsity and middle schools races. The boys JV winner was Jesus Torre of Pecos in 20:02.70. In the shorter middle school run, first place went to Indian School’s Kale Lorreto in 17:15.04.
The schools that entered were the Braves, Santa Fe High, ATC, Los Alamos, Pecos, Santa Fe Prep, St. Michael’s, Pojoaque Valley, Albuquerque Bosque, Espanola McCurdy, Cuba, Dulce, Jemez Valley, Laguna-Acuma, Pine Hill, Rehoboth, and Crownpoint.
John Grimley passed away in 2012 after impressive times as head coach of the Indian School track and field and cross country programs.
