Surprise, surprise, there have been a number of them 75th annual boys Little League World Series, but Friday’s 6-0Canada win over Japan was a real headliner at South Williamsport, Pa.
Number one, it was the first Canada, this time represented by the Vancouver British Columbia, had ever defeated Japan, one of the perennial powers among the International field, and this was a stirring victory as both teams went scoreless until the Canada top of the sixth when it pieced together all six runs in what was a pitching duel until then.
It was the second win in two starts for Canada after it blanked Australia, 7-0, in its first round game. It managed seven hits and one error while the team from Japan had five hits and one miscue. Now Canada remains in the winner’s bracket while Japan falls to the loser’s bracket in the double-elimination format.
Then there was Panama handing a 9-3 setback to Caracao after the Caribbean representative blanked Nicaguraga, 2-0, in the opening round. And Honolulu, Hawaii made it a 12-0 no contest rout over the team from Massapequa, New York, to advance to 2-0 and even New York’s record at 1-1.
And Santa Clara, Utah, reaching the World Series for the first time, had no chance in the 11-2 defeat against the Southeast Tennessee team that became 2-0.
The Saturday schedule has Europe-Africa versus Australia, the Mideast facing the Northwest, Puerto RIco meeting up with Latin America, and New England going against the Mid-Atlantic team.
