CAPITAL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ADVANCE

By Arnie Leshin
After coming off an impressive 17-0 win over visiting Albuquerque Academy, it doesn’t get any easier for the Capital football team when it hits the road for a Thursday night game against non-district opponent Albuquerque Atrisco Heritage Academy.
It’s the clash of the Jaguars, and while Capital has had a win, a loss, a win, a loss, and a win, Atrisco has won four in a row after an opening 59-36 setback at Albuquerque Sandia. It followed by shutting down Albuquerque Rio Grande, 52-0, won at Albuquerque Eldorado, blanked Albuquerque Manzano, 53-0, and won a close one, 59-54, versus visiting Albuquerque Mesa Visa.
And for these Jags, the schedule gets even tougher with games against Albuquerque Cibola, Rio Rancho High, Rio Rancho Cleveland, and Albuquerque Volcano Vista, all good teams, but Capital might also be a tough task.
As for head coach Joaquin (Wax) Garcia’s Capital team, it is 3-2, with the losses at Alamagordo and a tight tussle 28-24 setback to undefeated visiting St.Michael’s. It has been led on offense by the Munoz brothers, senior quarterback Julian and sophomore running back Juan, and size-wise, it’s a toss-up, with Julian at 5-foot-8, 155 pounds and Juan at 5-7, 154. Each has scored three touchdowns, Julian with two on the
ground.
These Jaguars have tallied 154 points and allowed 86. And they have moved up in the 6A ranks following the shutout of Albuquerque Academy. After this road test, they are home to Los Lunas and Albuquerque High, at Clovis, and the regular-season finale at crosstown rival Santa Fe High.
