COLLEGE FOOTBALL

By Arnie Leshin
Call it from the frying fan into the fire, but don’t inform the new No. 1 that.
That’s undefeated Tennessee the new college football team on top of the heap, but it also invites a tough task for the Volunteers. It was Georgia who they knocked down two places, but what do you know, that’s where Tennessee will be, at the Bulldogs, and don’t you think it the place will be packed to see No. 1 against No. 3. The Vols don’t expect to be welcomed in Bulldog land, but that’s what awaits them.
Hit the road and face the quick pressure as the underdog, for Georgia’ reigning national champions, is just that, favored, first by 11 and one-half points and now dropped to 8 and one-half. Amazing what home, sweet, home does.
With the Dawgs falling to No. 3, unbeaten Ohio, instead of No. 1, now sits at No. 2, but have no fear for the Buckeyes playing at Northwestern. In fact, the odds zoomed from 31 and one-half to a whooping 38 and one-half. Pity the Wildcats fans.
No. 5 Michigan would like to move up after shellacking state and Big Ten rival Michigan State and not long after several Wolverine players were attacked in the tunnel by Spartan players after the final whistle. It was not a pretty thing and charges have already been made for what was an uncalled for nasty beating on the road. Michigan can relax now, it is favored by 28 points at Rutgers Saturday.
Now Clemson, which came from way behind at home to get past a Syracuse team that was issued 19 yellow penalty flags in the second half, now takes to the road, to unranked Notre Dame in South Bend, and what do you know, the improving Fighting Irish are favored by six points.
Then there’s one-loss Alabama, now ranked sixth, is favored at unranked LSU, not only that but the odds even fell from 6 and one-half down to 3 one-half. No. 7 unbeaten TCU is home to Texas Tech and a 10-point pick. No. 8 Oregon is a whooping choice at Colorado, with the odds jumping from 24 and one-half to 31 and one half, and No. 9 Southern California is at California Berkley and favored by 22.
Elsewhere, No.10 UCLA and No.11 Utah should not have a problem at Arizona State and Arizona, although the Sun Devils could hang in there. No. 13 Kansas State pays a visit to unranked Texas and is a 3-pont underdog. No. 14 surprising Illinois hopes to avoid being attached at Michigan State and arrives favored being favored by 10.
Then there’s 16th-ranked Penn State favored by 14 at Indiana, No. 17 North Carolina as the pick by 4 points at Virginia. No. 18 Oklahoma State is still recovering being shut out by pesky Kansas State and is favored by 6 at Kansas. Unranked Oklahoma is playing lots better and is favored 4 at Baylor. Surprising No. 25 Tulane is favored by 12 at Tulsa, No. 20 Wake Forest is at No. 21 North Carolina and this one is rated a toss-up.
No. 22 Syracuse heads for previously ranked Pittsburgh and is a 4-point underdog. This winds down. One more, Brigham Young is the 8-point underdog at Boise State. Another is South Carolina by 7 at Vanderbilt, and in this state rivalry contest in South Florida, Miami is a stunning 8-point underdog versus Florida State, while Minnesota is a 9 and one-half choice at Nebraska.
