NM HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL VYING FOR STATE TOURNAMENT SPOTS

In 2A Almost all of the contending state tournament girls teams are streaking.
 
Up at the top is Mesa Vista (21-3), which just lost a game, but right behind is Capital (19-5) with 13 straight wins, Clayton (18-5),Tatum (17-6) with five wins in a row, Dulce (16-6), Mescalero-Apache (18-7) with four straight, Santa Rosa (17-7) on a 3-game win streak, Academy for Technology and The Classics (16-7), Albuquerque Menaul (16-7) winners of five straight, and Escalante (16-7) on a six-game win skein. 
 
That’s the top 10 in the 2A class of 30 teams. But right up there is Laguna-Acuma (17-8) with six consecutive wins, Pecos (13-11), Lordsburg (11-10), Penasco (12-11), and Eunice (11-11). 
 
Monte del Sol Charter has won one of 21 starts, Tierra Encantada has lost all its 19 games, and McCurdy is 1-22. 
 
No such winning streaks in 3A, except for defending state champion Robertson at 28-1 and having won 15 in a row, the low loss coming to 5A Las Cruces Centennial in the Clovis tournament back in January. 
 
Behind the Cardinals is Navajo Prep (21-7), Santa Fe Indian School (21-7), Crownpoint (23-8), Tohatchi (22-8), Socorro (18-7), Dexter (15-7), Thoreau (18-11), Hatch Valley (17-11), and the top 10 rounded out with Tucumcari (13-11). 
 
Zuni (14-12) and Cuba (14-13) are the only other teams over .500, with Albuquerque Sandia Prep (11-15), Albuquerque Cottonwood (10-12), possibly Raton at 11-17, West Las Vegas at 9-15, and St. Michael’s at 10-19 in the 25-team class. 
 
Then there’s 4A similar to 2A in teams that are streaking. The frontrunner is Kirtland Central (23-1) with 10 straight wins, Gallup (20-4) with four in a row, Albuquerque St. Pius X (18-5) with 10 consecutive wins, Albuquerque Hope Christian (19-6) on a 13-game win streak, Los Alamos (16-7), Silver (15-7) with nine straight, Valencia (16-8), Artesia (15-8) winners of four in a row,  Bloomfield (14-9), and Goddard, Moriarty, and Albuquerque all at 14-10 in the No. 10 spot. 
 
Albuquerque Highland (13-11) and Portales (12-11) are also in the hunt for state out of the 29 teams in this class. 
 
In 5A, it’s undefeated Albuquerque Volcano Vista all by itself at 29-0, and then comes Farmington (28-3), Albuquerque La Cueva (21-7), Hobbs (23-8), Albuquerque Highland (20-7), Carlsbad (22-8), Las Cruces (22-8), Organ Mountain (23-9), Las Cruces Centennial (20-10), and No. 10 Clovis at 18-11 in the 27-team class.
 
Then comes the others in the hunt, Gadsden (16-10), Albuquerque Sandia (17-11), Mayfield (17-12), Cleveland (16-12), Piedra Vista (16-12), and Rio Rancho (14-14). Albuquerque Rio Grande has gone 0-for-25 and Deming 6-20 with 15 straight setbacks.
