Santa Fe National Forest Enters Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Santa Fe National Forest Implements Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Amid Rising Wildfire Risk

SANTA FE, N.M. — In response to increasing fire danger due to dry conditions and warmer temperatures, the U.S. Forest Service has announced Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for the Santa Fe National Forest. The restrictions are in effect immediately and apply to all areas marked on the official map provided by the Forest Service.

Under these restrictions:

  • Campfires are prohibited outside of official, developed recreation sites.
  • Smoking is banned, except inside enclosed vehicles or buildings.
  • Campfires are only permitted in designated fire rings located within developed recreation areas.

The USDA Forest Service emphasized that the goal of the restrictions is to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during this critical period. Forest officials urge all visitors and residents to adhere strictly to these rules and remain alert to fire safety guidelines.

The areas affected include much of the Santa Fe National Forest, stretching from the Jemez Mountains to areas surrounding Pecos and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. A detailed map showing the restricted areas is available through the Forest Service and is included in the official order (Order Number 03-10-00-25-05, Exhibit A).

Forest officials encourage the public to report any illegal fires and to practice extreme caution with anything that could spark a flame.

For updates and further information, visitors can contact the Santa Fe National Forest offices or visit www.fs.usda.gov/santafe.
