Highlights: Aerial support and strategic firing operations are helping to advance full suppression efforts of the Laguna fire. As a result of fire activity and planned suppression tactics, increased smoke production can be expected in the area.
Fire Activity: Firefighters made significant progress yesterday in achieving full suppression objectives on the Laguna fire. Moderate temperatures and scattered showers across the area helped to slow the spread of the fire and create more favorable fire suppression conditions. Crews assigned to the northern section of the fire continued mop-up operations along containment lines, working to secure the perimeter of the fire.
In a coordinated aerial operation, fire managers utilized Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and helicopters to conduct strategic aerial ignitions along the northern perimeter of the fire above La Presa Canyon. Today fire managers will carry on with these strategic ignitions to help stop the fire’s forward momentum toward the Rio Chama drainage. UAS operations will continue to play a critical role in full suppression efforts, particularly in areas of steep and rough terrain that crews cannot safely reach on foot. Water-dropping helicopters remain on standby to support these operations and ensure that the fire stays within the planned containment boundaries.
Today, crews will continue grading and chipping along with road repairs on Forest Service Road 151. Increased smoke can be expected due to heightened fire activity and strategic firing operations along the eastern perimeter of the fire.
Weather: Partly sunny skies with increasing cloud coverage today. Isolated and scattered thunderstorms throughout the area could result in frequent lightning, strong and erratic wind gusts, and potential flooding. Cloudy conditions and lingering storms will continue into the evening and diminish after midnight tonight.
