New Mexico has no shortage of stunning vistas and dizzying elevations from which to enjoy them. As long as you’re not averse to heights, there’s some good dining and drinking to be found up there too. This week’s focus is on high-up spots: mountain-town tiramisu, happy hour on a deck, and burgers and brews to refuel after a hike. There’s just something about the crisp air and the burning in your calves that makes everything taste a little bit better.
Though it draws ski crowds in the winter, Red River has plenty of appeal in the warmer months too. Between the scenery, the decadent New Mexican breakfast plates, and all the local wine on offer, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into in this little mountain town.
Like Red River, Cloudcroft is most known as a spot for skiers. But if you’re traveling with a three-year-old who’s not too interested in hitting the slopes, you might need to find some other ways to spend your time there. Thankfully, there are plenty of coffee shops, alluring old bars, and cozy dessert spots to explore.
If you’re located in or around the Albuquerque area, you might already know the East Mountains as a good destination for hiking or mountain biking. But the towns of Cedar Crest and Tijeras also offer plenty of hearty breakfasts, beers, and even acoustic sets at sundown. Whether you’re seeking strenuous elevation gain or simply want to enjoy the views from a patio chair, the East Mountains hold several stops worth your while. Now that Greenside Cafe is back open, there are even more reasons to make a trip.
It’s a known fact that Izanami in Santa Fe is the best place to sip sake. With the recent addition of a happy hour featuring rotating small plates and cocktail specials, it’s become a perfect weeknight destination for anyone willing to make the drive. The best seats in the house are, naturally, outside.
