Another year, another brazen attempt by pro-abortion Democrats to bury the truth about abortion in New Mexico. This time, they want to wipe out every public record of abortion reporting—while continuing to force New Mexican taxpayers to bankroll elective abortions, including for non-residents.
SB 30 repeals Section 24-14-18 NMSA 1978—the state’s only mandatory reporting requirement for induced abortions—and passed the Senate Health and Public Affairs Committee on a strict 6-4 party-line vote this Sunday. Sponsored by radical, up-to-birth Democrat Sen. Peter Wirth of Santa Fe—who teamed up with late-term abortionist Dr. Eve Espey at UNM to ram through last year’s anti-transparency bill—this dangerous measure now heads to the Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing and vote before hitting the Senate floor. Sen. Jay Block (R) cut straight to the heart during debate: “I think we’re hiding an abortion holocaust in New Mexico.” Pro-life legislators asked for current abortion numbers, after being told the information was already available—neither the sponsor nor so-called “expert” Planned Parenthood lobbyist could produce them.
Meanwhile, as New Mexico Alliance for Life has exposed taxpayers have already poured out an estimated:
- $30 million into the abortion industry since 2021.
- $20 million for state-sponsored abortion clinics in Doña Ana County and northern NM.
- $10 million directly funding elective abortions including for out-of-state women.
If SB 30 passes, vital public records on abortion rates will disappear, erasing the truth from the very taxpayers forced to pay for these deadly procedures. This isn’t about privacy—it’s about concealment. Repealing the state’s only dedicated reporting requirement hides real harm: malpractice, severe injuries, medical emergencies, and deaths—like the preventable death of Keisha Atkins and the more than 50 emergency transports documented by NMAFL via public records from one Albuquerque killing center.
“Pro-abortion Democrats, led by radical Sen. Peter Wirth, are fighting to give the abortion industry yet another free pass from public scrutiny—while forcing taxpayers to keep paying. Why demand absolute secrecy when 59% of New Mexicans want more abortion restrictions,” said Elisa Martinez, Executive Director of New Mexico Alliance for Life. “SB 30 doesn’t just hide the numbers. It buries the truth about harm to women: injuries, emergencies, malpractice, and deaths—like Keisha Atkins’ preventable death and over 50 documented emergency transports from one clinic. This is a deliberate cover-up dressed up as ‘provider safety’—while patients and the public bear the cost.”
This selective secrecy shields the abortion industry while New Mexicans foot the bill for a system with less oversight than almost any other medical procedure. Repealing transparency doesn’t protect anyone—it protects the cover-up.
Planned Parenthood-endorsed Sen. Cindy Nava tried to shame pro-life Republicans for opposing the bill, implying they were unqualified because of their sex. (NMAFL previously exposed her false claim that her mother “received mammograms” from Planned Parenthood—which doesn’t even offer them.

Positive pro-life momentum: SB 206, statewide safe haven baby box legislation, was introduced January 30, 2026, by Sen. David M. Gallegos (R) and co-sponsors Rex Wilson, William E. Sharer, Gabriel Ramos, and Jay C. Block. The bill finally clarifies anonymous relinquishment in baby boxes, grants immunity to installers, and meets federal tribal rules—overcoming years of confusion. For 4–5 years, pro-abortion Democrats have killed or stalled similar life-saving measures, despite bipartisan support and proven results (13 boxes in place, 4 infants safely surrendered). SB 30’s fate now lies with the Senate Judiciary Committee—while we push forward life-affirming bills like SB 206.
