Celebrate GilaFest with the New Mexico Department of Wildlife
Join the New Mexico Department of Wildlife for a family-friendly day of outdoor fun, wildlife experiences, and community celebration as we mark two major milestones: the completion of a decade-long renovation of the Glenwood State Fish Hatchery and the opening of the new Glenwood-Allred Wildlife Management Area, a beautiful destination for birding and hiking.

What to Bring
Some activities will take place on uneven terrain. Hiking boots and outdoor clothing are recommended. Guests are also encouraged to bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.
Gila Trout Stocking
This is a great chance for the public to help stock one of the world’s rarest trout species — and one of New Mexico’s native trout.
Participants should arrive at the Catwalk Recreation Area parking lot by 9 a.m.
The method of stocking will depend on water conditions, but plans are to stock fish a short walk from the parking lot using buckets. More fish will be stocked farther up the Catwalk Trail, with bags of fish placed into backpacks for transport.
The Department will provide buckets, bags, water, and fish from the Glenwood State Fish Hatchery.
Recommended Gear for Trout Stocking
Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, and waterproof hiking boots are ideal for navigating the trail and streambanks.
Those who would like to participate in stocking efforts farther up the trail should bring a backpack large enough to hold a fish bag with a few gallons of water.
Partner Opportunities
If you are interested in partnering by providing a demonstration, activity booth, or educational materials, or if you would like more details, contact Assistant Chief of Education Curt Coffman at DGF-WildlifeEd@dgf.nm.gov.
We look forward to celebrating New Mexico’s wildlife and heritage with you at GilaFest!
