After a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed this week between the United States and Iran, spokespeople from both Israel and the Iranian regime issued warnings regarding the continued IDF presence in southern Lebanon. The Times of Israel reports that Iran claims IDF activity in the region constitutes a violation of the MoU, while Israel continues to face threats from the Hezbollah terrorist group. This week, several IDF soldiers were injured, and one was killed in Hezbollah-related attacks.
IDF forces remain stationed across the border to prevent Hezbollah fighters from reoccupying strategic areas. In fact, the IDF has made its largest territorial gains in southern Lebanon since the war with Iran began.
The IDF’s potential withdrawal from areas of southern Lebanon was still being discussed under direct negotiations being held between Jerusalem and Beirut, separately from the US-Iran talks. The teams were expected to convene again next week.
The talks — which Israel has said are ultimately aimed at securing a full peace deal, while Lebanon has said they are only focused on de-escalation — have faced an uphill battle, since Hezbollah has vowed not to recognize or abide by any deal they yield, raising the prospect of a renewed civil war in Lebanon.
Speaking to Al Akhbar, Esmaeil Baghaei told the outlet that the MOU determined that the US and Iran “will negotiate exclusively on the nuclear file and the lifting of sanctions.”
Baghaei said that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, despite the fact it has enriched uranium to levels far beyond what is needed for civilian use while obstructing inspectors and regularly vowing to destroy Israel.
Local media outlets describe the IDF presence in Lebanon as an “occupation,” despite the fact that Israeli strikes and military operations have been carried out in response to attacks by Hezbollah against Israeli troops and communities in northern Israel.
As the United States begins its 60-day mediation process with Iran, Israel will continue its separate discussions with Lebanon. The Fellowship prays for Israeli and American mediators as they lead these efforts on their respective fronts, so that shalom—peace—may finally shine upon the Holy Land and throughout the region.
