Trump Vows Harsh Response After Iran Attack on U.S. Bases

Tehran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. military bases in Jordan in what President Donald Trump described as a surprise attack. No damage, injuries, or fatalities have been reported. The Jerusalem Post reports that Trump has vowed to retaliate for the strikes.

“We’ll be hitting them hard,” Trump continued, according to [Fox News’ Trey] Yingst.

Trump described Iran’s strikes as a surprise attack, allegedly telling Yingst that US forces had mere minutes to intercept the incoming Iranian missiles.

He also confirmed to Yingst that joint US-Saudi Arabia strikes against Iran-backed Iraqi militias were coordinated with the Iraqi government.

In regard to the status of communication with Iranian leadership after the renewed back-and-forth hostilities, Trump told Yingst that they will allow lines of communication to stay open and “let them keep talking.”

Yesterday, it was reported that the United States, together with Saudi Arabia, carried out strikes in Iraq against Iran-backed terrorist groups that had been directed to attack U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure. The U.S. military has said that all attacks on American troops this week have been unsuccessful. Trump also revealed today that the strikes were conducted in coordination with the Iraqi government.

As fighting resumes, Iran has rejected an Omani proposal for a joint control arrangement for the Strait of Hormuz that would have included collecting voluntary fees from passing ships. The United States continues to seek to remove Iranian influence over the strategic waterway.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised his meeting with Trump yesterday, saying it “was a meeting with full cooperation, with mutual support, with understanding on the joint goal that Iran won’t have nuclear weapons, and also other goals.” After the meeting, both leaders attended the memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
