New Mexico Wildlife: Pollinators, Public Lands, Fishing and More

There is plenty happening outdoors across New Mexico this summer, from protecting the pollinators that keep our ecosystems healthy to exploring new fishing destinations and learning how conservation projects are making a difference across the state.

The New Mexico Department of Wildlife’s July/August 2026 update highlights several ways residents can enjoy the outdoors while also helping protect the landscapes and wildlife that make New Mexico unique.

The Power of New Mexico’s Pollinators

Bees may get most of the attention, but they are far from the only pollinators doing important work across New Mexico.

Butterflies, birds, bats and other species all play a role in pollinating plants that support wildlife, agriculture and healthy ecosystems. Even small changes at home, such as planting native flowers and creating pollinator-friendly spaces, can provide valuable habitat.

Ride Responsibly on New Mexico’s Public Lands

New Mexico offers countless opportunities for off-highway vehicle riders, but enjoying those trails also comes with a responsibility to protect them.

Staying on designated routes, respecting other people using public lands and following safe riding practices can help prevent damage to sensitive habitat while keeping trails available for future recreation.

A $10 Stamp Making a Big Difference

A relatively small investment is helping fund some major conservation work around New Mexico.

The Public Land User Stamp helps support habitat restoration projects throughout the state. Those projects can include wetland restoration, improvements to wildlife migration corridors and forest-thinning work designed to improve habitat and reduce wildfire risks.

It is an example of how outdoor recreation and conservation can work together to protect New Mexico’s public lands.

Take on a New Mexico Fishing Challenge

If you need an excuse to grab your fishing gear and explore another corner of the state, New Mexico’s fishing challenges may be exactly what you are looking for.

The challenges encourage anglers of different experience levels to visit new waters, catch qualifying fish and work toward special recognition and collectible challenge coins along the way.

It turns a day of fishing into a statewide adventure — and gives anglers another reason to discover places they may never have visited before.

Meet One of New Mexico’s Biggest Game Fish

If you are looking for a fish with a little attitude, meet the tiger muskie.

Tiger muskies are among New Mexico’s largest sport fish and are known for their impressive size, strength and the challenge they present to anglers.

For fishermen who enjoy chasing something a little bigger than the average catch, these fish can provide a memorable experience.
