September News: A New Season of Learning in Santa Fe

September is here, bringing a new season, new opportunities, and plenty happening throughout Santa Fe. At Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, it’s also a special time to celebrate something at the heart of everything we do: literacy.

September Is National Literacy Month

September is National Literacy Month, a time to recognize the importance of literacy and the opportunities that open when people have the skills and confidence to read, write, communicate, and learn.

Literacy is about more than words on a page. It can mean greater independence, stronger connections, new employment opportunities, and the confidence to participate more fully in our community.

This month, we also celebrate the volunteers, tutors, students, and community members who make that possible every day. Every lesson taught, every conversation practiced, and every new skill learned is another step forward.

International Literacy Day — September 8

On September 8, people around the world recognize International Literacy Day.

Observed by UNESCO, International Literacy Day highlights literacy as a fundamental human right while drawing attention to the millions of people who continue to face barriers to education and opportunity.

It’s also a reminder that literacy is something we can strengthen right here at home. By supporting learners in our own community, we help create opportunities that can last a lifetime.

Practice English Conversation Group Returns

We’re excited to welcome back the Practice English Conversation Group on Thursday, September 17, from 3–4 p.m. in the SFCC Adult Education Department.

The group gives English language learners an opportunity to practice conversation with a native English speaker in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Sometimes the best way to become more comfortable with a new language is simply to use it. These conversations give students a place to practice, ask questions, meet others, and build confidence along the way.

A special thank-you to LVSF volunteer Janis Luedke for facilitating this wonderful opportunity!

Become an ESL Tutor

Want to make a difference in someone’s life this fall?

Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe will hold its next English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutor Training on September 17, 18, and 19.

Becoming a tutor is an opportunity to help someone strengthen their English skills, gain confidence, and work toward their personal goals.

Those interested in becoming an ESL tutor can apply online through the Tutor Application Form or contact an LVSF coordinator at 505-428-1174 for more information.

Around Santa Fe in September

Of course, September isn’t only a busy month for learning. There’s plenty happening throughout Santa Fe as summer begins to give way to fall.

The 102nd Burning of Zozobra — September 4

Old Man Gloom is getting ready for another very bad evening.

The 102nd Burning of Zozobra returns to Fort Marcy Park on Friday, September 4.

This year’s theme, “The Tyranny of Gloom vs. the Spirit of ’76,” puts a 250th-anniversary twist on one of Santa Fe’s most famous traditions.

General admission is $30, with $5 off general admission for New Mexico residents. Children 10 and under are free, tickets for students ages 11–23 are $15, and seniors receive $10 off.

For more than a century, Santa Fe has gathered to watch Old Man Gloom go up in flames—and once again, September begins with one of the city’s most unmistakably Santa Fe traditions.

Labor Day — September 7

Labor Day is Monday, September 7.

We hope everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the holiday, relax, recharge, and spend a little time with family and friends as another New Mexico summer begins winding down.

Autumnal Equinox — September 22

Fall officially arrives with the Autumnal Equinox on September 22.

The changing season is a fitting reminder that learning doesn’t have an expiration date. No matter our age or where we are in life, there is always something new to discover, a skill to strengthen, or another opportunity to grow.

At Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe, we’re grateful to be part of that journey alongside our students, tutors, volunteers, and supporters.

Here’s to September—and to a new season of learning in Santa Fe!
