NMAFL Says Las Vegas Targeted for Northern New Mexico Reproductive Health Center

New Mexico Alliance for Life (NMAFL) says it has uncovered new information regarding the expansion of taxpayer-funded reproductive health facilities in New Mexico.

According to the organization, the University of New Mexico is considering Las Vegas, New Mexico, as the location for a reproductive health center in northern New Mexico.

The development follows a $10 million appropriation approved by state lawmakers in 2025 for UNM to plan, design, construct, equip and furnish a reproductive health care clinic in northern New Mexico.

LAS VEGAS IDENTIFIED AS POSSIBLE LOCATION

NMAFL says the information came from statements made by Christopher Arndt, MD, Interim President and CEO of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, during a 2026 UNM Board of Regents meeting.

According to NMAFL’s account of the meeting, Las Vegas was identified as an “ideal location” for the proposed northern New Mexico facility.

NMAFL opposes the project and characterizes the proposed facility as part of an expansion of taxpayer-supported abortion services in New Mexico.

THE $10 MILLION APPROPRIATION

The project traces back to the 2025 New Mexico legislative session and House Bill 450, the state’s capital outlay legislation.

The final legislation included $10 million for the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico to:

Plan, design, construct, equip and furnish a reproductive health care clinic in northern New Mexico.

UNM was designated to oversee the funding and project.

The appropriation became a point of controversy during the legislative session, with opponents objecting to the addition of the reproductive health clinic funding to the larger capital outlay package.

NMAFL CALLS FOR PRAYER

New Mexico Alliance for Life is asking supporters to participate in a statewide Day of Prayer in opposition to what the organization describes as taxpayer-funded abortion centers in New Mexico.

NMAFL says it plans to release additional information concerning the proposed Las Vegas facility and its investigation into UNM’s reproductive health expansion.

The organization says additional details about the Las Vegas plans will also be discussed during its statewide Day of Prayer.

As plans develop, the proposed northern New Mexico reproductive health center is likely to remain a closely watched issue involving state funding, UNM Health Sciences and reproductive health policy in New Mexico.
