Sept 24 – 30 is ‘Employ Older Workers Week’ in New Mexico
SANTA FE, NM – Governor Susana Martinez proclaimed the week of September 24th through September 30th as “Employ Older Workers Week” in New Mexico. The New Mexico Aging & Long-Term Services Department joins the Governor in celebrating the talents and contributions of older workers, and reminds New Mexicans about the valuable resources it offers to older adults who are looking for work.
“We recognize the vital role of older workers in the workforce. Their work ethic, experience and knowledge provides a valuable contribution to employers and to our state economy,” said Kyky Knowles, Acting Secretary for the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department. “The department’s programs are designed to help address the specific challenges older workers face when looking for their next job, and to help employers recruit and retain more older workers.”
The Department’s 50+ Employment Connection provides general job search assistance for anyone 50 years of age or older. Staff and volunteers can help polish resumes, develop “networking” cards, help with interview skills and computer tutoring. The program also works with employers to help them understand the benefits of employing older adults.
The Aging and Long-Term Services Department reported that from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, 50 percent of the people served at the 50+ Employment Connection found a job. Almost 750 New Mexicans utilized the services of the 50+ Employment Connection offices during that time.
The Aging Department currently has 50+ Employment Connection offices in Santa Fe (505) 476-4623, Albuquerque (505) 383-3906, Rio Rancho (505) 629-7080, and Roswell (575) 624-6040. An additional office is planned to be re-opened in Ruidoso soon. Services provided by 50+ Employment Connection offices vary according to the skills of staff and volunteers in each office.
