Who invited Eldorado High? Just kidding, the 6A Eagles entered Saturday’s Jaguar Track and Field Invitational and had a grand time topping both the girls and boys field at Capital High.

“This was a pretty good group of schools we competed against,” said Kathy Brion, who is head coach of the Eagles’ girls. “Some of my best athletes had some tough competition.”

Eldorado’s strength was in the relays, winning all four, taking first in three running events, and also in three field events, including a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault. The Eagles won 10 of the 19 events for 205.60 points, and 4A St. Michael’s placed second with 149.

Third was Santa Fe Prep with 111, Santa Fe High was one point behind the Griffins with 110, Pecos scored 33.50 for sixth, Santa Fe Indian School 31 for seventh, and host Capital took eighth with 31.

For meet director Rita Vigil, it was her birthday, but when all was done, she said she was too tired to do any celebrating.

The field totaled 10 schools, and despite Eldorado leading the way, the Santa Fe area teams did quite well only two days after the Golden Spike Classic at Santa Fe High concluded on Thursday following one postponed day.

Lady Horsemen senior Amanda Marborough won both the shot put (32-02) and the discus (109-4), qualifying for state in the discus with the second- best throw in 4A, after already qualifying in the shot.

Prep freshman Hayden Colfax, who has already qualified in four individual events, won the 100 hurdles in 16.97, now the fastest time in the event. She has also qualified in the 300 hurdles (49.81), the high jump (4-10), and the triple jump (32-65). Second to her in the hurdles was freshman teammate Leyla Sharples (18:65), and who has now qualified for state.

St. Michael’s junior Lauren Chafins, the defending state 400 champion, has now qualified in that race (59:17), and the 200 (26:41) after dashing 26.75 to win at the Jaguar. Her sophomore teammate, Janai Clayton, led a 1-2-3 Lady Horsemen sweep in winning the 800 in 2:32.25. Right behind her were sophomore teammate Violet Eklund (2:37.13) and senior Esperanza Cortez (2:37.53)

Santa Fe High senior Sierra Sweeney ran the 3,200 in 12:41.34 to finish first, and sophomore teammates Judith Allison and Gillian Chmielarezyk won the 300 hurdles and high jump, respectively. Chmielarezyk soared 5-feet and Allison ran 49.21.

Then there was Pecos’ sophomore Mikayila Gonzales tossing the javelin 92-05 to win the event.

Except for the 1,600 sprint medley where St. Michael’s was runner-up to Eldorado (4:41.05) by passing the baton in 4:43.31, the other relays weren’t quite as close.

Griffins’ senior Annika Birk, who has qualified for state in the 100 and 200 meters, ran second to Chafins in the 200, and second to the Eagles’ senior Maddi Hirschman in the 100. Birk sped 13:18 in the century and 27:74 in the 200.

Another who settled for second was Eklund in the 1,600 behind Eldorado’s freshman Jasmine Turtle-Morales, who won by 20 seconds.

In the 300 hurdles, Colfax ran 50:62 to finish behind Allison. In the high jump, she took second with a best of 4-10. In the long jump won by the Eagles’ senior Kiera Newman, Demonettes’ freshman Riannah Vareka was next with a best of 16-04.75.

In the shot put, Indian School sophomore Jordan Moyra finished second (32-01). And in the discus, Griffins’ 8th grader Rafaella Mark was the runner-up (77-11).

In the relays, Santa Fe High took second in the 4 x 100 and St. Michael’s second in the other three.

The next stop will be the Capital City Invitational Saturday at Santa Fe High.
