Sheriff’s Deputies to conduct DWI checkpoint Thursday April 13th

Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert A. Garcia announced that sheriff’s deputies will conduct a DWI Sobriety Checkpoint Thursday, April 13, 2017. This law enforcement operation will be conducted in north-central Santa Fe County in conjunction with the annual Santuario de Chimayo Pilgrimage. Deputies will look for impaired drivers and intensify enforcement of all traffic infractions.
Sheriff’s deputies will also conduct routine mobile patrols of the roadways leading to Chimayo throughout the Easter holiday weekend. During these heightened patrols deputies will look for impaired drivers as well as increase their traffic enforcement along routes of travel for pilgrims trekking to Chimayo.

Sheriff Garcia reminds the motoring public not to drink and drive, obey the speed limit and make sure that every passenger in the vehicle is properly restrained with an appropriate passenger restraint. If you are driving please be extra careful and be more observant of pedestrians while traveling along the route of the pilgrimage.

Reducing the number of persons killed or injured in alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes is a public safety priority for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. DWI is one of our communities most serious and lethal crimes.

The Sheriff’s Office urges motorists to be extra cautious and observant while driving during the Easter Week holiday due to increased pedestrian traffic on state, county and city roads.
Individuals who plan to walk along roadways should dress appropriately in light-colored clothing, stay hydrated, and if walking during the night time hours please wear reflective material or have a flashlight. The Sheriff’s Office will be handing out glow sticks at various locations along the route of the pilgrimage on Thursday night.
