New Mexico Fishing and Stock Report

Catches of the week

  • Bluewater Lake: Joseph Green, 12, of Albuquerque caught and released a 38-inch tiger muskie. It was his first tiger muskie and he was using a Rapala X-Rap.
  • Escondida Lake: Paul Pargas of Albuquerque caught and released a 29-inch channel catfish Aug. 14. He was using worms and Fire Balls under a bobber.
  • Navajo Lake: Joe Weber of Albuquerque caught and released a 4.48-pound smallmouth bass Aug. 19. He was using a bone colored Pop-R.
  • Pecos River: Graydon Adams, 9, of Roswell, caught a 15-pound channel catfish Aug. 19. He was using chicken liver.
  • Santa Cruz Reservoir: Preston Hagman, 12, of Santa Fe, caught a 19-inch rainbow trout Aug. 20. He was using red salmon eggs. 
  • Seven Springs Brood Pond: Savana Sanchez, 3, of Albuquerque, caught her limit of fish Aug. 16. She was using meal worms and glitter salmon eggs under a bobber. Amir Artelejo, 9 and Eddie Artelejo, 11, of Albuquerque, caught limits of rainbow trout Aug. 19. They were using Fire Balls.

The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:

  • Caballo Lake: Michael Gonzalez of El Paso, Texas, caught a 23-inch, 5-pound, channel catfish Aug. 12. He was using chicken liver.
  • Cochiti Lake: Dominique Amor Tenorio, 6, of Santo Domingo Pueblo caught a big northern pike Aug. 5. She was using a worm.
  • Morphy Lake: Hope Nowers, 5, of Isleta, caught two 10-inch rainbow trout Aug. 12. She was using PowerBait.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: Fishing slowed this past week as heavy rains raised the lake level six vertical feet. The good news is the boat ramp is now open.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 9.78 cfs. Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, brassies, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and Pistol Petes.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, tubes, creature baits, senkos and curly tail grubs for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows, spoons, grubs and jig and night crawler rigs for walleye and white bass. Fishing was fair to good using shrimp, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 65.7 cfs. Fishing was very good using elk hair caddis and parachute Adams for trout.

Cowles Ponds: Fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was slow.

Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Fire Bait, worms, Pistol Petes, silver spinners and Super Dupers for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good trolling Platte River specials and spinners. Anglers trolling for trout reported catching several pike in the 20 to 28-inch range. Most of the pike were caught by anglers using Rooster Tails and Platte River specials. Fishing from the bank was fair using PowerBait for trout and excellent using worms for perch. We had no other reports. The 25th Annual Fish Fest will be  Sept. 2-10. For more information, call (575) 377-6941.

Gallinas River: Fishing was good using worms, Fire Balls and copper John Barrs for trout.

Hopewell Lake: Fishing for trout was slow to fair using worms and PowerBait under a bobber.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes, elk hair caddis, wooly buggers and hoppers for trout. Fishing was good using worms for perch. The best reports are coming from anglers fishing the evening hours.

Los Pinos River: Fishing was good using night crawlers, salmon eggs, prince nymphs, bead-head hare’s ears and copper John Barrs for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using worms and PowerBait for trout.

Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 70.1 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms, San Juan worms, parachute Adams, prince nymphs, stone flies and Panther Martins for trout.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 72.2 cfs. Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, worms, elk hair caddis and midge imitations for trout.

Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 322 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, hoppers, Chernobyl ants, copper John Barrs, spinners and night crawlers for brown and rainbow trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 32.9vcfs. Fishing was good using parachute Adams, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 19.1 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms, prince nymphs and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 18.9 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and salmon eggs.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair using liver, cut bait and prepared baits for catfish. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using senkos and creature baits. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 70s.

Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, tubes, salt craws, chatter baits, curly tail grubs and night crawlers for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was fair to good using spinner/night crawler combinations, crank baits and spinners. We had no other reports.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 295 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains:  We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for tiger muskies was fair using hot dogs, swim baits and Rapala X-Raps. We had no other reports.

Brazos River: Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, Fire Balls and worms for trout.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 392 cfs and 602 cfs respectively. Fishing above and below El Vado was good using weighted wooly buggers, terrestrials, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. New Special Trout Water: The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, creature baits, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using corn dry flies for carp. Fishing was fair using shrimp, worms, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was good using grubs, tubes, spinners, crank baits, and worms for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow.

Heron Lake: Bank fishing was good using garlic PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing near the boat ramps. We had no other reports.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 13.9 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was slow to fair for anglers using earth worms and San Juan worms. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair using Fire Balls for trout. We had one other report and that was from the San Antonio where a few small browns were caught by an angler using worms.

Laguna del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes under a bubble, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Lagunitas Lakes: Fishing was fair using Fire Balls, PowerBait and Pistol Petes for trout.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was very good using finesse worms, tubes, curly tail grubs, crawdad flies, crank baits, jerk baits and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. There was some topwater action early in the day.  Fishing was very good using swim baits, chatter baits, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was very good using worms, spinners and small crank baits for perch. Carle and I were here last week and the perch were so aggressive, they were hitting everything from the smallest spinner to 6-inch deep diving crank baits. The perch ranged in size from 4 to 8 inches. Fishing for kokanee salmon was slow. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 598 cfs. and expected to be raised to 700 cfs on Tuesday. Reports this past week ranged from poor to excellent. All the excellent reports came from anglers fishing the Quality Waters. They did very well using small midge patterns, crystal flash emergers, RS2s and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Anglers fishing the bait waters did not fare as well. One angler we spoke to said he’d been fishing the bait waters below Brown’s Corner off and on for the past three weeks and had no luck. He was using PowerBait and salmon eggs. Anglers who had some success through the bait waters were using small bead head nymphs and San Juan worms and adding a little weight above the fly.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Zeke’s trout bait, Fire Balls, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Tingley Beach: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was slow to fair using spinners, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing for catfish was slow with just a few caught by anglers using chicken liver and night crawlers. We had no other reports.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, chatter baits, tubes, senkos and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for crappie was slow with just a few caught by anglers using minnows, grubs and small leech patterns. Night fishing was fair using cut bait, shrimp and chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish were caught by anglers using chicken liver and cut bait. We had no other reports.

Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 111 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, tubes, finesse worms and night crawlers for largemouth bass. Fishing for catfish was slow with a few caught by anglers using shrimp and chicken liver. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,500 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo and at the Mesilla Valley Dam was fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass and an occasional walleye. A few carp were caught by anglers using corn. We had no other reports.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species

Southeast

Alto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 21.6 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver and hot dogs. We had no other reports.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using chatter baits, flukes, crank baits, tubes, plastic worms, senkos, tubes and jigs for largemouth bass and white bass. We had no other reports.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, Charlie’s catfish bait and chicken liver for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing early in the day. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 98.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver, night crawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 10.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, creature baits, senkos, jigs, tubes and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and shrimp on trotlines for catfish. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, bluegill and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and bottom bouncer rigs tipped with minnows and night crawlers for walleye. We had no other reports.
