20 New Mexico companies in 11 communities received funding for on-the-job training for newly created jobs
Santa Fe, N.M. – Today, the New Mexico Economic Development Department announced that the Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP) board approved $5,134,207.04 to help 20 New Mexico companies, in 11 communities, expand their workforce, adding 549 jobs and providing enhanced skills training to 51 workers across the state. Companies utilizing JTIP during the first quarter ranged from large manufacturers to cybersecurity startups.
“JTIP is growing our private sector and creating good paying jobs for people in New Mexico,” said Economic Development Secretary Matt Geisel. “This powerful tool helps us recruit new companies to our state and helps homegrown companies succeed.”

Phat Steel: Established in 2006, Phat Steel, Inc., a subsidiary to Amfabsteel is a miscellaneous steel fabricator located in Bernalillo, NM.  Phat Steel has fabricated miscellaneous steel for Amfabsteel, Inc. to be used in Healthcare and Hospitals, Office Buildings, Casinos, Industrial and Technological Buildings, Hotels, Condominiums, and National Laboratories. The majority of projects are in the southwest, including New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Oklahoma. 7 Jobs, $109,766
CSI Aviation, Inc.: Established in 1979, CSI Aviation, Inc. (CSI) is a diversified and experienced global air transportation and aviation logistics company that delivers a broad set of air transportation services for passengers, cargo, emergency response, air ambulance and armed escort missions. The company manages airfield operations, ground support, arranges aircraft purchases and leases, manages aircraft maintenance and modifications, arranges air charter services and provides staging and security services. 23 Jobs, $369,089.24

UBQid, LLC.: UbiQD, LLC is a New Mexico LLC established in 2014 to commercialize inexpensive low-hazard quantum dots developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and MIT. Headquartered in Los Alamos, NM, the company manufactures low-toxicity quantum dots targeting applications in solar windows and security inks. The company is working with partners in other emerging quantum dot markets, such as: solid-state lighting, safety, design, and personal care products. 3 Jobs, $60,081.88

Old Wood, LLC.: Old Wood LLC was founded as a small sawmill by David Old in 1999 near Pecos, NM. The Old family’s certified tree farm was burned in a devastating wildfire in 2000. This fire prompted a move into the production of wood flooring for the Santa Fe home market, which at the time was booming. As Old Wood began to grow, it moved and opened a small factory in Las Vegas, NM where it continues to operate today to produce lumber, finished wood flooring products and heat-treated bundled firewood. 9 Jobs, $40,276.00

Paradise Power Company, Inc. (PPC Solar): The Paradise Power Company (PPC Solar) founded in 1979, specializes in the design, installation, maintenance and operations of solar systems. New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NMMEP): The New Mexico Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) works with companies statewide to help grow manufacturing in New Mexico. MEP provides consulting services and hands-on training to manufacturers to streamline operations, develop strategies for growing revenue, and become more competitive. MEP offers a variety of training courses specifically tailored to meet the needs of manufacturers including the Kaizen philosophy, Lean Manufacturing, Lean Accounting, The 5S System, Value Stream Mapping, Plant Layout, Lean Certification, Training Within Industry and ISO 9001. Additionally, the company works hand-in-hand with companies to implement lean manufacturing practices and ISO 9001 quality management systems and processes. Amendments: JTIP policy allows companies to amend their active JTIP projects. Amendments may increase or decrease the original project budget depending in the change. Typical amendments include increases to the number of job slots approved in a particular job classification, the addition of a job classification to the project, or adjustments to approved wage ranges.

Step up: The Step Up Program helps employees and their employers through training and reimbursements. Training and development results in new employee knowledge and skills.

To qualify for JTIP, new or expanding companies must either create a product in New Mexico, or provide a nonretail service with 50 percent of the company’s costumer or revenue base outside of the state. The eligible jobs must be full-time and year-round. The trainee must be a new hire to the company and have been a New Mexico resident for at least one year at any time prior to being hired.
