With all due respect to top-seeded, undefeated Santa Fe Prep’s girls, beware of 5th-seeded Albuquerque Hope Christian.

Because of their recent accomplishments of three state soccer championships and a loss in last year’s semifinals of A-4A, the Huskies could manage only a 10-10 record over the regular-season (6-0 in winning district), but still earned a worthy seed as the quarterfinals are played Wednesday at the Bernalillo Soccer Complex.

It routed 12th-seeded Navajo Prep, 10-0, in the first round at home, and now meets up with 4th-seeded Socorro, which is 14-4 and gained an opening-round bye. The Huskies have a rather young roster, but have gained enough experience to come on strong down the stretch. Plus, they are tournament-tough.

As for the Griffins, the lone unbeaten team in the state, they finally ended St. Michael’s hold on District 2-4A by turning back the Lady Horsemen, 5-3 and 2-1. Following a first-round bye, they take on 8th seeded Moriarty (14-7) which edged 9th seeded Portales, 1-0, at home.

St. Michael’s is the 6th seeded, is 15-6 and has played a tough schedule. It goes against 3rd seeded Albuquerque Sandia Prep, which is 13-7 and turned back the Lady Horsemen, 2-0, during the campaign. It comes off a first-round bye.

In the other 4A quarters, another 2-4A team is 10th seeded Robertson (10-11), which avenged two earlier losses to 7th seeded Taos by taming the Tigers, 2-0, on the road.

All these 4A marches at scheduled for 2 p.m. starts. The 5A girls all begin play at 9:30 a.m., and the 6A matches are slated for noon.

. . . In the boy’s 4A where all of its matches begin at 3:30, the defending champion is Santa Fe Prep, which is the 5th seed and opened with a 6-0 rout over visiting Santa Fe’s Tierra Encantada. The Griffins own a 12-5-1 record and meet up with No. 4 Moriarty (13-6-1), which had an opening-round bye.

Prep finished second in 2-4A to Robertson (14-6), which comes off a first-round bye and takes on No. 6 Hatch Valley (10-6-3).

The top seed is Hope Christian (18-2) and its first tournament match is against No. 8 NMMI (8-10-1).

The second seed, Sandia Prep is at 10-7-3 and opens versus No. 10 Albuquerque Bosque School (7-11-3), which went on the road and surprised 7th seeded Socorro, 1-0.

Boy’s 5A is course to start at 1 p.m., the 6A at 3 p.m.

All four fields will be in use for each match.
