Following in the steps of last year’s opener, St. Michael’s boys took to the road Tuesday night under new head coach David Rodriguez and again turned in a 67-42 rout over East Mountain in Sandia Park.

The Horsemen went into full gear quickly by racing to an 11-0 lead and extending it to 31-11 at halftime. Junior Jevon Montoya, the team’s top returning player, led the way with 16 points. He was the lone one on the team to score in double figures.

As was the slate to begin last season, St. Michael’s next plays at Albuquerque Bosque School and then at Los Alamos. It won against visiting Bosque last year, but fell to the Hilltoppers.

Then comes the annual Bobby Rodriguez Capital City tournament on Dec. 7 at Santa Fe High, which was named after David Rodriguez’ late father who was a long-time coach in the area, and the Demons open against Roswell.

Bosque opened with Tuesday night’s 80-51 trouncing by visiting West Las Vegas. The Dons are 1-1 following an 83-59 loss at Lovington.

It was a tough loss on the road for Santa Fe High when it dropped a 52-49 opener to West Mesa. It was a tight game throughout, with the Mustangs coming away with a 10-4 scoring advantage in the final quarter.

But it was the Demons ahead 35-28 at halftime. In the third quarter, they were called for 13 personal fouls and that sent West Mesa to the foul line to make good on 10-of-13 attempts. With four seconds left in the fourth quarter, Tony Flores converted a pair of freebies to bring the final score.

Santa Fe High’s could not get a shot away at the final buzzer.

“That’s the game right there,” said Demons’ head coach Zack Cole. “Yeah, they outscored us in the second half, but 10 of those points came at the free throw line.”

Santa Fe High did display balanced scoring, with senior Isaiah Andermann led Santa Fe High with 14 points, senior Victor Salcido adding 11 and 10 apiece from junior Antonio Lovato and freshman Fedonita “jb” White.

Capital High opens Saturday afternoon at Lovington.

Benny Gomez’ team will be counting on 5-foot-9 senior guard Tyler Alarid, 6-3 junior power forward Matt Smith, and 6-1 small forward, shooting guard Seth Arroyos, a sophomore. The Jaguars gained the state 5A semifinals last season before losing to Roswell.
