And up the hill from the softball field, the Capital High baseball team
also made it a double dip by turning back the visitors from Espanola Valley in the 2-5A doubleheader Saturday.
The Jaguar girls were still playing when their boys completed the sweep in defeating the Sundevils for the third time this season. With this, Capital improved to 5-18 overall and 3-6 in district.
In the 10-5 opener, the Jags scored twice in their first at-bat, added one in the third, five in the fourth, three in the fifth, and once in the sixth. They outhit Espanola, 8-7.
In the 12-7 closer, Capital took the early lead and maintained it as the Sundevils fell to 2-20 overall and 1-8 in district. The three district wins for the Jags were over Espanola.
At Albuquerque Manzano, the Santa Fe High baseball team lost a tough 1-0 opening game in nine innings, with the Monarchs scoring the winning run in the ninth. And in the second game of the District 2-6A doubleheader, the Demons again made a bid, but lost 6-4.
Here, Manzano took a quick 2-0 lead to offset the first-inning score by Santa Fe High, but the Demons took a 4-3 lead after three, but that’s when their scoring ceased as the Monarchs scored once each in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
The Demons conclude the regular season with a twin bill at home Saturday versus Albuquerque Eldorado.
In a District 2-4A contest at West Las Vegas, the Dons split with Taos, winning game one, 8-7, but dropping game two, 9-0. It put West Las Vegas at 10-11 overall and 4-7 in district. The Tigers are now 13-11 overall and 3-3 in district.
