One thing is certain, Shawn Roybal doesn’t go to a track and field to watch.

Instead he’s there to be busy, busy, busy, busy, busy, which makes for five events he competed in the annual Taos Tiger Invitational run on Saturday.

A St. Michael’s senior who displayed his versatility on the football field, he’s now doing the same in track and field, doing it since the start of the season.

Let’s start with the sprints. He raced to the finish in 11:25 of the 100 meters to top the field. Then there were the relays where he ran lead leg for the victorious 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay teams. Can’t forget the field events where he finished first in the long jump at 19-10 and second in the triple jump with a best of 39-10.

That’s truly a busy day, but a winning one. He picked up four firsts and one second.

On the 4 x 100, he ran with Hayden Lee, Sebastian Alcaraz and Michael Waring, and they timed 45:03. In the 4 x 200, it was with Lee, Alcaraz and Justice Johnson turning in a time of 1:32.84.

Most of the boy’s 10-school field was dominated by host Taos, which finished on top with 156.5, and St. Michael’s, which scored 121.5 as the runners-up. Way behind the two in third place was Pojoaque Valley and its 48 points.

The Horsemen also had a double winner in senior Jake Tetault. He won the shot put with a best throw of 44-2, and did the same in the discus by throwing 126-7. Second in the shot was St. Michael’s senior Adrian Balderpamos (41-7) and third in the disc was sophomore Jaden Misud (114-7).

Also winning twice was junior Justin Angel, He showed his heels to the field in the 1,600 and clocked 4:46.27, than did the same in the 3,200 with a winning run of 10:21.31. Pojoaque junior John Hall finished second in both. Third in the 1,600 was Horsemen junior Adrian Veruete in 5:43, while junior Eli Steward ran third in the 3,200 in 10:52.48.

St. Michael’s senior Lincoln Barker, in his initial try at track and field, continued his improvement by taking second in the high jump at 6-feet and fourth in the triple jump (37-10). In the 4 x 400 relay, the Horsemen ran fifth in 4:24.06.

St. Michael’s senior Joey Fernandez appears to be recovering from a shoulder injury as he took second a in the javelin at 131-2. Johnson came in third in the 400 in 52.19, and right behind was Alcaraz in 52.70, who also took fourth in the 110 hurdles. Lee dashed to fifth in the 100 meters in 11:79.

Third place in the 200 went to Horsemen junior Michael Waring in the time of 22.76. And in the 800, freshman teammate Dillon Goodwin ran fourth and clocked 2:22.91.

. . . In the annual Mark Shumate Invitational held at Albuquerque Menaul Saturday, the Santa Fe Indian School boys scored 31 points for fourth place, and Santa Fe Prep was seventh with 21.

No victories for either, but the Braves did get a second place from sprint medley relay that finished in 3:54. Their 4 x 400 quartet was fifth in 3:52.09.

In the 1,600, Indian School freshman Chris Humetewa came off his first win last week to run third in 4:53.10. In the 800, senor teammate Thomas Lucero came in fifth and ran 2:15.41.

In the 100 meters, the Braves picked up a fourth place from Morgan Matthews and he sped 11.90.

For the Griffins, senior Sean Coles had the best day. He came in second in the long jump by going 19-11. In the triple jump, he went 37-9.75 for fourth place. In the 200, he dashed 24.80 to finish sixth.
