You can tell that the state’s fall sports is winding down. Football and volleyball are still in their regular season, but underway now is the girls and boys state soccer tournament and the district cross country championships.

Except for 2-3A running and throwing on Saturday morning with an 8 o’clock slated start, and with St. Michael’s, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe Prep, Robertson, and host West Las Vegas,

So the Friday schedule has 5-5A at Albuquerque High with Santa Fe High and Capital in the field. In 2-3A at Pecos, there will be Desert Academy, Academy of Technology and The Classics, Espanola McCurdy, Coronado and Pecos.

In 2-4A at Pojoaque Valley, the field has the Elks and Elkettes, Los Alamos, Espanola Valley, and Taos. In 5-2A at Penasco, there will be Mesa Vista and Mora joining the host Panthers. All of these are slated for the afternoon.

These districts are the last chance to qualify for the upcoming state championships at Rio Rancho High School.

Then there’s the soccer opening round on Saturday.

In 1A-3A girls, 6th seed St. Michael’s (13-6-1) plays host to 11th seed ATC (8-6-1) at 1:30 p.m., and at Santa Fe Prep (10-5-1), the 5th seeded Griffins welcome 12th seeded Santa Fe Indian School (2-17-1), with the Braves making the field of a class with only 20 schools, two of which are independent.

Prep defeated St. Michael’s twice, which is why it became the higher seed. Also in the tournament from the same district are Albuquerque schools Sandia Prep (13-4-1) and Bosque School (12-6-1). The Sun Devils have won 11 in a row and the Bobcats have won their last three.

As for the boys, in 1-3A, 6th seeded St. Michael’s (12-7-1) is home to 11th seed Santa Fe Prep (3-13), which already lost twice to the Horsemen.

In 4A, 11th seeded Santa Fe High (13-6-1) travels to 2nd seeded Clovis (16-2-1) for a 2 p.m. match.

Also in 4A, 12th seed Goddard (10-8) is at 5thseeded Los Alamos (13-6-1) at 1, and also in 4A, there’s 11th seed Albuquerque Highland (8-8) heads for 6th seeded Taos (14-2-1) at 3:30.
