MENS AND WOMEN’S NCAA BASKETBALL SCHEDULES

By Arnie Leshin
All remained quiet on the women’s side of the NCAA Division I basketball tournament when its opening round began Sunday morningwith all the higher seeds advancing unlike the men’s first day when no less than five lower seeded sent the higher seeds packing.
That was 15th-seeded Oral Roberts over No. 2 Ohio State, 13th-seeded North Texas over No. 4 Purdue, 12th-seeded Oregon State over No. 5 Tennessee, 11th-seeded Syracuse over No. 6 San Diego State, and 10th-seeded Rutgers over No. 7 Clemson.
On day two, it continued when 14th-seeded Abilene Christian downed No. 3 Texas in the Lone Star State clash, 13th-seeded Ohio eliminated defending national champion Virginia, the 4th seed, and No. 10 Maryland over No. 7 Connecticut.
The only close call among the women was when 12th-seeded Stephen F. Austin raced to a 15-point first half lead over No. 5 Georgia Tech, and then held on as the taller Yellow Jackets began to use their height advantage to close the gap, and in the final minute forced overtime, and then claimed a 54-52 victory.
All the rest of the higher seeds made it through day one, and that included top seeds Stanford, Connecticut, North Carolina State, and South Carolina all winning handily, Then there was 2nd-seeded Baylor dominating No. 15 Jackson State, 101-42, and UConn, with legendary head coach Geno Auriemma sidelined for probably the first two rounds when he tested positive via the coronavirus pandemic, overwhelmed No. 16 High Point, 102-59.
Today, No. 7 Alabama takes on No. 10 North Carolina, No. 3 Georgia faces No. 14 Drexel, No. 6 Rutgers meets up with No. 11 Brigham Young, No. 4 Arkansas versus No. 13 Wright State, No. 3 Arizona goes against No. 14 Stony Brook, No. 4 Indiana plays No. 13 VCU, No. 2 Maryland lines up against No. 15 Mount St. Mary’s, No. 5 Gonzaga against versus No. 12 Belmont, No. 2 Louisville meeting up with No. 15 Marist, No. 2 Texas A & M facing No. 15 Troy, and No. 3 UCLA plays No. 14 Wyoming.
Who knows, there might be a surprise or two breaking out today. Rutgers-BYU could be close, and so may be Alabama-North Carolina, but the higher seeds look safe for now.
But the men had better take caution after the back-to-back eliminations of higher seeds. Oregon and Iowa might be interesting, but top-seeded, unbeaten Gonzaga will have to be careful against a team like Oklahoma that has had an up-and-down season but is capable of challenging the Zags.
Abilene Christian, a 14th seed, comes off the stunner over No. 3 Texas and now faces a hot 11th-seeded UCLA, while 10th-seeded Ohio ousted No. 4 Virginia, and now meets a mysterious up-and-down 5th-seeded Creighton, 8th-seeded Louisiana State tries to take down No. 1 Michigan, 5th-seeded Colorado and No. 4 Florida State might come down to the final buzzer, then there’s 3rd-seeded Alabama in a tough test against No. 10 Maryland, and 4th-seeded Kansas paying a 6th-seeded Southern California team that is making a late run.
The South and Midwest regions already have their Sweet 16 field. There’s No. 1 Baylor versus No. 5 Villanova, No. 3 Arkansas against No. 15 Oral Roberts, No. 8 Loyola of Chicago facing No. 12 Oregon State, and No. 12 Syracuse playing No. 2 Houston.
All the men’s games are being played in the Indianapolis, Ind., area. The West and East regions will have its Sweet 16  field this upcoming weekend, with the Final Four set for April 3rd in Indianapolis, and the final on April 5.
All the women’s games are being played in the San Antonio, Tx., area. The Sweet 16s will be played March 27th and 28th, the Elite Eight on March 29th and 30th, the Final Four on April 2nd, and the finals on April 4th, one day before the men’s championship.
Most recent NCAA sites for the women are the Minneapolis Target Center in 2022, the Dallas Airlines Arena in 2023, and he Cleveland Quicken Loans Arena in 2024.
