A sweep for St. Michael’s in its season opening doubleheader

By Arnie Leshin
No St. Michael’s girls basketball to play Thursday, so five of the players got to play for the softball team that swept visiting East Mountain in the season opening doubleheader.
In the 6-0 first game, junior Mariah Valdez took care of the pitching with 11 strikeouts in a four-hitter. In game two, it was senior Athena Archuleta, in her fifth year on the varsity, striking out five, issuing no walks, and allowing seven hits in the 13-2 victory.
The two also contributed with their bats. Both went 3-for-6 with a double each in the doubleheader, with Archuleta driving in six runs and scored three times, while Valdez added three RBI. Freshman Mia Duran also joined the hit parade with four hits in the two games.
“It was our first game since 2019,” said Lady Horsemen head coach Joe Alvarez, “and I felt like I hadn’t coached a game in forever. But we did fine, the five basketball players even got to play.”
St. Michael’s plays next at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex against Bernalillo on May 5th.
