Big second half gains the Capital High girls a 64-40 romp

The Capital High girls basketball team put an end to a 4-game losing skein by handing visiting Albuquerque Manzano a 64-40 setback in District 5-5A play Tuesday night.
The Jaguars, now 2-4 overall and 2-2 in district, put together a solid second half, outscoring the Monarchs, 32-16, and seniors Brenda Pinon, Ethena Silva and Rebecca Sorenson led the way in the scoring column, with Pinon having the team-high 14 points, Silva a dozen, and Sorenson scoring 10, with the trio five points short of outscoring Manzano. The Jags play next against winless Albuquerque Rio Grande and undefeated Albuquerque High.
In the opener of a doubleheader at the Christian Life court, the Academy of Technology and The Classics girls continued on the unbeaten trail with their fourth straight overall win and 1-0 in District 2-2A after downing Monte del Sol, 44-25. The Phoenix were behind 5-3 after one quarter, but its defense shut out the Dragons in the second quarter to take a 11-5 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, ATC came away with a 17-6 third quarter run to ring up a 28-11 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, Freshman Perla Miramontes came away with the Phoenix team-high of a dozen points. ATC plays host to Estancia Saturday.
Monte del Sol dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in district and plays Thursday night at Santa Fe Prep. It was led by 13 points from Araceli
Pena, while freshman Charli Kiesoglu and junior Anaya Mulakala tallied eight points each for the Phoenix, who forced 34 Dragon turnovers.
In another girl’s game, Espanola Valley trailed 11-10 at home after one quarter against Taos, and then turned it up to score 74 points over the next three quarters and win in a 84-32 rout of District 2-4A play. The Sundevils outscored the Tigers, 54-14 in the second half and upped its overall record to 5-1 and its district mark to 2-0. Taos fell to 2-3 and 1-1. Espanola heads for Moriarty Thursday and Taos is home the same night to Los Alamos.
