BOYS BASKETBALL

The undefeated Monte del Sol boys had an early struggle with the winless Academy of Technology and The Classics, but prevailed 62-46 by putting together a strong third quarter in the District 2-2A basketball game played at the Christian Life court late Tuesday afternoon.,
“We shot well,” said Dragons’ head coach Ralph Casaus, “I mean, we were 44 percent (26-59) from the field, but on the other hand, we also missed some easy shots, especially inside the paint: From behind the 3-point arch, we made 7-of-21.”
Monte Del Sol, now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in district, led only 29-24 at halftime, but outscored ATC, 17-7, in the third quarter, but that was enough after the Phoenix (0-4) were only outscored, 16-15, in the fourth quarter. At the end of the opening quarter, ATC was in front 15-13.
For the Dragons, senior Keith Montoya, a transfer from Santa Fe High, had the team-high 17 points, while 6-foot-5 senior Brayan Roybal added a dozen points, and sophomores Kevin Enriquez and Xandro Zubia tallied 10 each. Freshman and team captain tri-captain Julian Bernardino of ATC had the game-high 25 points.
Monte del Sol plays a non-district contest at 3A Pojoaque Valley Thursday night, while ATC plays host to Santa Fe’s Tierra Encantada at Christian Life the same day.
In other games Tuesday night, St. Michael’s topped visiting Los Alamos, 56-48, to up its overall record to 4-1, and Capital High hit the road to hand District 5-5A foe Albuquerque Manzano a 62-36 trouncing. Los Alamos is now 3-2 and Manzano 1-4.
