Lake Maloya and Lake Alice at Sugarite Canyon State Park are Closed

By NM State Parks

The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department State Parks Division announces that Lake Maloya and Lake Alice at Sugarite Canyon State Park near Raton are temporarily closed due to recent weather conditions and ice forming on the lakes. State Park officials have deemed the lakes unsafe at this time.

Both lakes are popular fishing destinations for rainbow trout, including some trophy-sized trout at Lake Maloya. Park staff will continue monitoring ice conditions and will advise when the lakes are safe for winter activities. The Lake Alice Campground is open on a first-come, first-served basis, and all the park trails remain open.

Sugarite Canyon State Park encompasses 4,000 acres located six miles northeast of Raton via State Highways 526 and 72. The park includes 20 miles of hiking trails, two campgrounds, and the remains of a historic coal mining camp. Contact Sugarite Canyon State Park at 575-445-5607 for fishing and lake conditions throughout the year.
