The Santa Fe High girls basketball team hit the road and cooled off Espanola Valley, 58-40, in non-district play Tuesday night.
It advanced the Demonettes to 7-6 overall as they put together a huge first half to down the Sundevils, who had won four in a row and also the Lady Horsemen tournament championship. Now they dropped to 5-8 overall.
Santa Fe High led 13-6 after one quarter and then scored 27 points in the second half to bring a resounding 40-17 halftime lead. It was up 48-30 after three quarters, but was outscored 23-18 in the final eight minutes.
Capital’s boys and girls both lost District 2-4A openers to Los Alamos, the boys falling 49-40 at the Jaguars’ court and the girls 46-25 at the Hilltoppers.
The Capital boys, now 8-6 overall, trailed 14-9 after one quarter and 23-19 at halftime. It was 35-all heading into the fourth quarter, but it was here that the home side was outscored 14-5. Los Alamos improved to 7-4 overall.
It’s been a crazy start for Capital in non-district play, losing three times to Espanola Valley, and two of three to Taos, with one Sundevils’ setback by three points and another by six, and one Tigers’ defeat was by six points.
The Jaguar girls hit a dry spell, scoring only six points in the first half and falling behind 28-6 to drop their 10th game in 13 overall starts. The Toppers are now 7-5 and play at undefeated Bernalillo Saturday. Capital plays again at Piedra Vista Thursday.
There was a doubleheader scheduled Tuesday at Academy of Technology and The Classics against Coronado, but no results were announced.
