Monte del Sol paving the way

Sophomore Elena Flores tallied 11 points, brought down seven rebounds and converted 5-of-6 free throws as Monte del Sol’s girls completed a sweep of Tierra Encantada, 30-20, in District 2-2A play at the AIA courts Tuesday.
In the previous meeting of this low-scoring rivalry, it was the Dragons on top 25-15. This time, they scored six points in the first quarter and held Tierra Encantada scoreless. But in the second quarter, MDS scored only one point and the visitors 10 to take a 10-7 halftime lead.
But it was all Dragons over the final two quarters, 23-10, to bring their overall record to 4-16 and 2-7 in district, while Tierra Encantada dropped to 3-13 overall.
At the Albuquerque Native America Community Academy, it was the Academy of Technology and The Classics handily winning 52-31 to up its overall mark 16-6 and 6-2 in district. NACA fell to 2-4 in district and 4-13 overall. In the previous game between the two, it was the Phoenix victorious 43-22.
Visiting Pecos swept Penasco with a 54-41 surprise in the girls doubleheader opener and dominating 92-50 in the boys closer. In the clash of Panthers, Penasco’s overall record fell to 16-7 and Pecos to 10-13. In the previous meeting, it was again Pecos, this time 55-41.
At Robertson, it was the top-ranked Cardinals’ girls winning their 22nd of 23 starts, 63-12, over Raton in District 2-3A, and are now 7-0 in district as the Tigers dropped to 10-15 and 1-7.
The Monte del Sol boys made it a sweep of Tierra Encantada in a 53-51 tight tussle, the ATATC boys romped over visiting NACA, 55-25, and Santa Fe High routed crosstown rival and 5-5A foe Capital, 69-41.
The Demons, in second place behind Los Lunas, are now 18-4 overall and 8-2 in district as the slumping Jaguars are now 1-6 in district and 10-13 overall.
