With their basketball gymnasium being renovated, the Capital girls basketball team welcomed the visitors from Albuquerque Manzano elsewhere Tuesday night and turned in a tight 41-39 District 5-5A victory.
It was a close game throughout, with Manzano up 7-6 after one quarter, 18-14 at the intermission, and headed into the fourth quarter in front 31-28, but were outscored 11-7 by the Jaguars in the final eight minutes.
The result upped the Capital overall mark to 5-15 and 2-2 in district, while the Monarchs fell to 2-17 overall and 1-4 in district.
At Santa Fe High in 5-5A, the Demonettes became 12-7 overall and 3-1 in district after handily sending Albuquerque Rio Grande away with a 59-12 resounding setback. It was the 18th straight overall defeat for winless Rio Grande and it is 0-5 in district.
Monte del Sol took a 36-23 loss at Estancia to fall to 3-12 overall and 1-3 in district, while Estancia rose to 5-13 overall and 2-2 in district. The Dragons were down 14-8 after the first quarter, 22-12 at the half, 34-14 after three quarters, and outscored the home side 9-2 over the last eight minutes.
At St. Michael’s, it was another tough setback for the Lady Horsemen as visiting West Las Vegas came away with a tight 55-54 win in District 2-3A. It dropped St. Michael’s to 1-3 in district and 7-14 overall. The Dons meanwhile moved their overall mark to 8-9 as well as 2-1 in district.
Up at Los Alamos, Pojoaque Valley trailed from the outset and left with a 59-38 defeat, while at Raton, district leader Robertson romped to the tune of 64-25.
At Albuquerque High in 5-5A, the Bulldogs defeated Los Lunas, 41-39, in a tight tussle. Academy of Technology and The Classics took a short hop to TIerra Encantada in 2-2A play and carried off a 50-12 triumph.
On Thursday night, Santa Fe Indian School plays at Robertson, and ATC plays host to Estancia.
