By Arnie Leshin
Surprise, well kind of, as the 2A Pecos basketball boys hit the road for 3A Raton Tuesday night and handed the District 2 leaders a 72-54 setback in non-district play.
It brought the Panthers’ overall record to 13-6 and dropped the Tigers to 12-4.
At Tierra Encantada 2-2A, the Academy of Technology and The Classics handily won the 60-26 contest, and at Estancia, Monte del Sol junior sharpshooter Kevin Enriquez tossed in the game-high 34 points, teammate Ivan Morales added 10, but the Dragons were defeated 71-55.
In 5-5A at Los Lunas, it was a 56-55 squeaker for the Tigers over Albuquerque High, as Los Lunas won its fifth in a row, upped its district record to 5-0 and are 13-8 overall. Albuquerque High fell to 7-12 overall and 2-3 in district.
Visiting Taos had no problem rolling past Pojoaque Valley, 76-36.
The two boys leaders in 5A are both undefeated, Las Cruces at 22-0 and Albuquerque Volcano Vista 19-0. Both sport unblemished records to go with their winning streaks.
In District 5-5A, Santa Fe High is on top at 16-3, have won three straight and 3 of 4 in district play. Right behind is Los Lunas and then comes Capital, 9-10 overall and 3-3 in district.
