SFNF Sponsors Junior Snow Ranger Program at Aspen Basin

By SFNF

Ever wonder what it takes to become a snow ranger? Fourth and fifth graders can sign up for an interactive two-day Junior Snow Ranger Program at Aspen Vista on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) to learn more about conservation, winter safety and shared stewardship of public lands. Plans include a special guest appearance and demonstration by a search and rescue dog.

SFNF staff and volunteers will lead the program on Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to noonand March 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Kids will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the program. Parents can sign their kids up for the program by emailing jennifer.sublett@usda.gov by close of business Thursday, Feb. 17.

Participants are encouraged to complete the downloadable 22-page Become a Junior Snow Ranger activity booklet prior to the in-person activities at Aspen Basin.

The Junior Snow Ranger program is specifically designed for fourth and fifth graders and includes outdoor and indoor activities for safety, wildlife, winter ecology, recreation and the joy of winter fun. The activity booklet guides kids on an interactive journey and encourages them to share new information with friends and classmates.

After completing the booklet, children have the opportunity to become a Junior Snow Ranger by taking the pledge to “save and faithfully defend from waste the natural resources of my country” and teach others about outdoor winter safety. Kids who complete the booklet and take the pledge on March 5 will receive a Junior Snow Ranger patch, bandana and card at a short graduation ceremony.

For public health and safety, please follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance and comply with state public health orders to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
