Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District Postpones Fuelwood Permit Sales

By SFNF

After surveying forest roads and ground conditions around fuelwood collection areas, the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District has postponed its fuelwood permit sales. All Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) offices will begin virtual sales of 2022 personal-use fuelwood permits on May 2.

Road and ground conditions on the forest help determine the fuelwood season for personal use. After the recent spring snow, the Pecos/Las Vegas District decided to postpone fuelwood permit sales to protect public safety and prevent damage to infrastructure and natural resources.

As a reminder, until the SFNF reopens its doors to the public, fuelwood permit sales will again be conducted virtually over the phone by credit card to protect the health and safety of employees and the public.

The nonrefundable $20 permits, which expire on Dec. 31, 2022, are good for up to 10 cords. Dead-and-down permits are valid on the entire forest, except in designated wilderness areas. Fuelwood maps are posted on the SFNF website. The Pecos/Las Vegas District Offices also sell permits to harvest green wood on Rowe Mesa.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the SFNF has continued to assess the best way to provide services to our communities and hopes to open our offices to the public again soon. Follow all Centers for Disease Control guidelines and state public health orderswhen collecting fuelwood. Stay up to date on the fuelwood program by checking the SFNF website and following the forest onFacebook and Twitter.
