St. Michael’s softball team joined in the hit and run parade

By Arnie Leshin
St. Michael’s softball team battled back from a five-run burst from visiting Pojoaque Valley in the third inning and a sixth inning solo home run that put it behind 12-11 to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh, then win it on sophomore Mia Duran’s run-scoring single right after for a 13-12 win that upped its overall record to 5-1.
The non-district game at the Christian Brothers Athletic Complex wasn’t one for the pitchers as it brought runs and hits. Duran had a 3-for-5 game and scored twice, senior Mariah Valdez came away with two hits in five at bats and scored twice, while Isabella Lopez had one hit, walked three times, and scored four times.
In the third, the Elkettes (4-7) went in front 7-5 with the 5-run surge, then took a 12-11 lead on Anissa Herrera’s solo home run in the sixth. In the last of the seventh, Valdez singled to right field to score 8th-grader Marcella Ruiz, who had reached base when she was hit by a pitch, and this tied the score at 12-12. Then Duran came up with a single to score Valdez with the winning run.
The next stop for the Lady Horsemen is the Moriarty Invitational that begins Thursday and they will first line up against Hatch Valley. Pojoaque next plays Friday at Socorro.
