Good showing by Pecos senior Savannah Ortiz

Santa Rosa reigned supreme at the annual DIstrict 6-2A track and field championships, but it was a stellar girls performance turned in by Pecos senior Savanah Ortiz.
Ortiz was a three-win standout as she sped first in the 100 and 200 meters and added the long jump.
Said assistant Panthers coach Victor Ortiz: “She did very well and it might have been our best girls showing at districts. To win three events is excellent.”
Finishing third to Santa Rosa in the team scoring, Pecos’ other individual winner was junior Kristina Ragland, who won the 800 in 2:48.74. Her dad, assistant coach Lawrence Ragland, has also been announced as the new head coach of the girls basketball team following the resignation of Bryon Gonzales.
The Panthers also had three runners-up that included the relays,and also included the relays with three third places. In the relays, Santa Rosa won the 4 x 100, the 4 x 200, the 4 x 800, and the sprint medley, and Texico took first in the 4 x 400.
Pecos ran second in the 4 x 100 and sprint medley, and third in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400.
Meanwhile, Ortiz claimed the 100 in 13.34, the 200 in 28.04 and the long jump with a best of 16-07.
The lone Panther who finished second was junior Aleah Tanuz with a best throw of 28-08.50 in the shot put, and the winner was Clayton senior Natalia Gonzalez at 30-10. A third place went to Pecos’ 8th-grader Angelina Barbero in the 400 as she ran 1:26.04 in the race won by Texico sophomore Cadence Smith in the time of 1:06.94.
Texico was second in the team scoring and Clayton placed fourth. As for the Lions, they won it all by 24 points.
The next stop for 1A, 2A and 3A are Friday and Saturday’s state championships at the University of New Mexico’s track and field complex.
