PECOS BOYS TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pecos boys settled for second place behind Santa Rosa, but picked up a pair of wins from junior Elijah Lujan, plus first places from juniors Zackery Fox and Malik Barrens, and the same from their 4 x 800 relay quartet at the District 6-2A track and field championships held at Fort Sumner.
Lujan ran first in the 1,600 and 3,200 distances. He timed 5:21.84 in the 1,600 and 11:22.34 in the 3,200. As for Barren, he led the field in the 300 hurdles and clocked 43.74. The winning 4 x 800 foursome timed 9:27.4.
Barren was second in the 100 and 200 meters, dashing the 100 in 12:24 behind Clayton junior Rylan Ruf’s 12:04, and timed 24.24 in the 200 as Santa Rosa senior Juan Diaz won in 23.94. In the triple jump he went 36-02 to take third as the triumph went to Santa Rosa sophomore Jykub Romero-Gage at 39-02.75.
Then there was Fox winning the 800 in 2:10.94, with junior teammate Lorenzo Ortega next in 2:12.84. Pecos junior Israel Villegas came in second in the 110 hurdles in 18.84 behind the Lions’ junior Andres Madrid, who won in 16.24. In the 300 hurdles, it was a third place for Villegas in the time of 47.14.
The Panthers also had sophomore Joshua Gonzales as the runner-up in the pole vault as he went and over at 11 feet behind victorious Clayton junior Cole Keeth, whose best was at 12-06.
In the 400, it was Pecos senior Javis Gonzales finishing third in 55.14. In the 3,200 it was a third place for Panthers sophomore Andres Archuleta as he timed 12.17.54, and in the shot put, third place went to Pecos senior Derik Ortiz with a best of 42-04.75.
The shot put was won by Texico freshman Tave Smith at 48-93,59, and he also doubled by taking the discus at 12-09. Wolverines freshman Alex Fuentes won the javelin with a best of 124-05. And in the relays, the Panthers ran second in the sprint medley in 4:06.34, and third in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400.
Santa Rosa won handily by 21 points and swept the boys and girls. Behind runner-up Pecos was Texico and fourth was Clayton.
Now it’s the state track and field championships Friday and Saturday at the University of New Mexico track and field complex that also includes 1A and 3A.
