Alamogordo scored a trio of first quarter touchdowns

By Arnie Leshin
Alamogordo High took care of business quickly in its Friday night non-district football game against visiting Capital.

It was already 21-0 after one quarter and 27-7 at halftime after the Jaguars reached the end zone in the last minute before the intermission and fell to 2-2 following the 38-14 setback. For Alamogordo it was the third win in four starts.

The Tigers began the scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run from Mason Pitman in the opening minutes. It got to 14-0 after a blocked punt led to another touchdown. Then it was 21-0 on a 23-yard TD pass from Damon Mayberry and the home team made all three point-after kicks.
It got worse when Alamogordo blocked another punt and Elijah Lee soon turned it into a 21-yard touchdown run to go up 27-0 when the PAT was wide right.
Capital’s versatile senior quarterback Julian Munoz came away with some impressive option runs, but it was his sophomore brother Juan who sped 50 yards for the initial Jaguars touchdown and the PAT followed.
Lee also picked off a Capital pass on his own 3-yard line, but the Tigers didn’t score again until the fourth quarter when they pieced together 11 points, with the visitors then responding with their final TD and extra point.
The Jags have a home non-district contest Friday night versus Albuquerque Academy, which is 3-1. They follow that with a night game in Albuquerque against Atrisco Heritage at Community Stadium, then get a visit from Los Lunas before playing home with a visit from Albuquerque High, a tilt at Clovis, and the regular-season finale at Santa Fe High.
