It’s bye weekend ahead for undefeated St. Michael’s

By Arnie Leshin
While undefeated St. Michael’s gets a bye weekend, winless Santa Fe High sees its initial chance to gain a victory Saturday night when it travels to winless Albuquerque Manzano.
That’s right, the Monarchs are 0-3 and have been outscored 140-0, and the two will play at Wilson Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Horsemen won their fourth-straight by routing visiting Los Alamos, 45-0, Saturday afternoon. The Hilltoppers lost their third of four starts and didn’t cross midfield until their final drive of the game, but just like the contest had gone,
they turned it over on downs with four minutes remaining.
For head coach Joey Fernandez, it’s his 20th season in that role for his alma mater.
As for St. Michael’s, it’s off until the Sept. 24 Saturday night non-district tilt at Aztec. This latest success contained the usual mixture of offense and defense, On the defensive side, it allowed non-district foe Los Alamos only 68 total yards that included but 26 yards along the ground.
On offense, the home side at Christian Brothers Athletic Complex was led by senior
quarterback Zach Martinez as he completed a dozen of his 17 passes for 154 yards and he was sacked only once behind his offensive line. Two of the touchdowns passes went to senior Creed Chavez who also ran for a fourth quarter 26-yard touchdown run.
And seniors Marcus Leyba and Taven Lozada accounted for all the scoring. Leyba also scored twice.

Said Fernandez: “I’ve been saying this to these guys lately, but our offensive line is further along now then it was when we got to the state championship game last year. “We’re not necessarily bigger or any more experienced, but these guys are doing everything we ask of them.”

At Ivan Head Stadium, the Friday nightgame between Santa Fe High and Silver was postponed because of lightning strikes and heavy rain, and it was moved to a Saturday morning 9:30 kickoff. The Fighting Colts spent the night in Santa Fe instead of taking the long ride home to Silver City.

No matter, they scored early and posted a 32-0 victory, the fourth loss in a row for
the Demons and the third-straight shutout after the opening defeat at Albuquerque West Mesa.
The early morning start lacked the energy of a normal game. The lack of fans, the band and the cheerleaders missed it, and the vocal student cheering section was slim.

Santa Fe High fumbled on its first offensive possession and that allowed the visitors to go 41 yards in three plays before Mason Locket ran in a 17-yard touchdown. The
Colts found the end zone again in the second half and were in control most of the way, except that the Demons did drive as far as the Silver 21 before being stopped on fourth down.

Now there’s confidence to finally win when head coach Andrew Martinez takes his team to tackle Manzano.
