By Arnie Leshin
In his new role as head volleyball coach, Santa Fe Prep athletic director Todd Kurth got his initial win in four starts when the Griffins hit the road for East Mountain in Sandia Park and left with a 3-0 zip.
“We showed up this time with more energy and effort,” Kurth said.
His junior daughter Emery paved the way with 11 kills, junior Nicole Gonzales served five aces along with six assists and a pair of kills, and sophomore Dahila Reyes Newell came up with three blocks and the same number of kills in the 27-25, 25-22, 25-10 sweep.
The next stop for Prep is its home opener, a visit Friday from Albuquerque Bosque School.
In boys soccer, defending state 6A champion Santa Fe High lost for the second time in six outings via Thursday afternoon‘s 4-0 setback versus Hobbs in the first round of the annual Albuquerque Academy, and now plays in the consolation semifinals Friday against Piedra Vista.
“We shot straight at the goal, at the goalkeeper,” said Demons head coach Chris Eadie, “or shot over the goal, and Hobbs was very good.”
Also in boys soccer, Santa Fe Prep scored three times in the second half to gain a 4-0 victory at non-district opponent Albuquerque Oak Grove, its sixth in seven starts and plays next against visiting East Mountain on Sept. 13.

After a lone goal in the first half, Asher Nathan and Vanya Ferjancic each added a goal and assist and goalie Van Anderson came away with seven saves.

In girls soccer, visiting Santa Fe High advanced its record to 5-1-1 by shutting down
Taos, 7-0, in non-district play.

“We created many more opportunities to make plays, Demomettes head coach Justin Najaka.

Following a 3-goal hat trick in the first 19 minutes by Asha Smelser, Santa Fe High’s Jazzi Gonzalez scored in the 53rd minute before the rest of the goals made for no contest in the match. The Demonettes now head to play a non-district match at Albuquerque Bosque School on Sept. 13and Taos (3-4) plays at Capital Monday.
