St. Michael’s goes 3-for-3

By Arnie Leshin
It was a big day indoors and outdoors Wednesday for the St. Michael’s athletic teams.
On the volleyball court at Albuquerque St. Pius X, the Lady Horsemen are now undefeated in six matches and ranking atop in 3A with the 3-2 win in five tough sets and now head for the annual Tournament of Champions that starts Friday at Santa Fe High and Capital.
St. Michael’s dropped the opening set, 25-20, but responded by taking the next two, both at 25-22, but the home side forced a fifth set with a 28-26 triumph in set four, and St. Pius took a 7-6 lead before the Lady Horsemen won by scoring eight of the remaining nine points to win the decider 15-9 on Marissa Sandoval-Moya’s kill.
Middle hitter Alanna Overton and right-side hitter Carmen Pacheco of St. Michael’s came away with key points in sets 2 and 3.
In soccer, both the St. Michael’s girls and boys emerged victorious. The girls upped their overall record to 3-2 as junior Lauren Pecos scored five minutes into the match and freshman Sophia Miera tallied twice in the 4-0 win over visiting Albuquerque Bosque, and senior goalkeeper Jacquelyn Gorman came up with six saves.
The Lady Horsemen play next at Sandia Park against East Mountain Friday.
The Horsemen also blanked Bosque, 3-0, as Trevor Erickson scored twice and dished out an assist to Marco C’de Baca, who also had an assist to go with his goal.
Now 5-2, St. Michael’s plays next against visiting Capital on Sept. 13.
